Better Globe Forestry writes MoU with KEFRI

Better Globe Forestry writes MoU with KEFRI

Published: 2009

In 2008 Better Globe Forestry signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) in the area of cooperation in developing industrialized planting of Mukau in Kenya. This means that Better Globe have the full support of their knowledge, laboratories and research facilities in Kenya. We have already gotten a lot of support during our pilot project in Kiambere and they have already helped us with several insects, pests and diseases related problems and because of this we have managed to handle all of them in a good way and decreased the mortality rate of the trees from 40 percent to less than 5 percent. That is one of the reasons that we now are ready to speed up the planting process, which we could not do before. Note that Kiambere has been a pilot project to gather experiences and knowledge about how to plant trees outside the rainy season. The mortality rate has therefore been high, before finding the best ways to reproduce trees in dry seasons.

Better Globe Forestry is known to practically all forestry related people in Kenya and has a very good reputation there. By launching the Tree magazine "MITI", Better Globe Forestry will be even more recognised the coming years.

Better Globe Forestry with “In Vitro” development

Published: 2008

The Kenyan company has done a lot of development work during 2008. Our pilot project in Kiambere has now ended and by the end of 2009 we are starting to plant trees in an industrialized way in Sosoma, where we have 60,000 Ha land for planting Mukau and Acacia Senegal.

We also expect to have Mukau produced in laboratory (In vitro) at the end of 2009, from the laboratory we are working with in Belgium. Until that happen we will use the old way of germinating the Mukau trees and that is also what we have done so far in Kiambere.

Our Workers in Better Globe Forestry

Published: 2007

Between November 2006 and April 2007 we planted about 150,000 seedlings of Mukau, Neem and Jatropha. On the ground this translates itself into 83 Ha. This trial plantation which is a mandatory part of our 5,000 Ha project in Kiambere teaches us a lot about afforestation in the tricky conditions that are ASAL (arid and semi-arid lands) in Kiambere.
In the Kiambere area people survive with less than 1 US$ a day and they are eager to see us starting big scale with the tree planting project. Our small pilot plantation allowed us to hire about 60 men and women, all from the area. Please try to imagine that in some cases a salary makes the difference between live and death.

80 000 Trees is being planted

Published: 2007

Better Globe Forestry is now in the middle of a new busy planting period with the planting of aproximatrely 80,000 trees on our first plantation at the Kiambere lake in Kenya. The photos show two of the tree types in our nursery, Neem and Jatropha. Better Globe's chairman, Rino Solberg, on the image to the left with a Neem tree in his hand.

The Neem tree is a medical tree which will grow for 4-5 years before we start harvesting it. The Jatropha tree can be harvestet already after 2-3 years and the oil content of the "nuts" will be used to produce biodiesel.

Before we started the planting we had an inspection from The National Environment Management Authority i Kenya (NEMA). NEMA is the governemental body which control all bigger developments whithin the area of environmental impact, in order to find if they have a negativ impact on the environment. We are happy to say that they were happy with the job we have done and Better Globe Forestry's tree planting project got accepted. One of the things we have done was that we have made several small "dams" in order to stop erosion of the sand to hinder it from flowing into the lake.
